Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey fell down last evening during delivering a speech to a prominent legal group and then he’d been brought hastily to George Washington University Hospital.

Mukasey is still staying at the hospital for observation but a Justice Department spokesman said Mukasey had strong vital signs and was “in good spirits” after the incident , which occurred at an annual Federalist Society gathering.

President Bush had a phonecall with Mukasey by just before 7 this morning, according to a statement issued by White House spokeswoman Dana Perino . The statement said Mukasey “seems to be well” and “is getting better” .

A man who was there the black-tie dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Woodley Park said that Mukasey was visibly shaking and seems like he was slurring his words before he collapsed to the floor. Video footage showed a tuxedo-clad Mukasey , staggering behind a lectern as FBI agents in his security detail raced to his side.

Justice Department officials along with Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip gathered at the hospital . In a formal statement released beyond midnight , department spokesman Peter Carr said: “The Attorney General is conscious, conversant and aware . He is receiving the best care and appreciates all of the good wishes and prayers he has received . The doctors will keep take good care of him overnight for further observations “.
