Will Obama Really Choose Holder To Be His Attorney General ?
Eric Holder, 57, co-chaired President-elect Obama’s vice presidential selection process. A graduate of Columbia University and former federal prosecutor, he is a partner at the Washington law firm of Covington & Burling and He’d once been a deputy attorney general under janet Reno from Bill Clinton’s administation .
According to NBC , Eric Holder, a former U.S. attorney and Superior Court judge, was offered the job conditionally last week and accepted, pending formal vetting. Holder, who is still being vetted, has indicated he will accept the job if it is offered, the sources said .So He would be the first African American to head the Justice Department.
Four former Justice Department Democrats who worked for Holder during that time said they were pleased with the news that Holder would likely be attorney general, and all hinted that they may be willing to return to the department. “He’s a great choice for attorney general,” said the attorney, who asked not to be identified because the nomination is not yet official. “He’ll be terrific.”
But the formal announcement was withheld for two reasons.
First, Obama wants to name his economic team, including Treasury secretary, and his secretary of State up front.
And, second, he wants his transition people to run Holder’s name by some influential senators.
Holder, you may recall, was the acting attorney general who approved Bill Clinton’s last-minute list of presidential pardons just before leaving office.
That list included one very controversial and embarrassing pardon for fugitive investor Marc Rich, whose ex-wife coincidentally just happened to have made substantial contributions to Clinton.
